Asphalt is a combination of asphalt/bitumen and crushed stone, sand, and gravel.  It is used to make an asphalt concrete that is rolled out to form roads, parking lots, lanes and driveways.  A typical residential driveway has, on top of a prepared and compacted base, 2 to 2.5” of asphalt; this thickness is optimized for automobiles based on use and cost.  Large vehicles should not use the typical driveway as damage will result.  A residential driveway is not designed to withstand a heavy load.

Our crews understand the full process of providing you with a long lasting driveway.  Our first step is to prepare a proper and compacted base; this is critical to supporting the asphalt.  The asphalt is laid and compressed with a power roller.  It is then cooled with water to help hardening.

Curing a new driveway takes time; it should not be used for at least 2 – 3 days after it has been laid.  The hot asphalt needs to cool and set.  If the weather is very warm, then hosing down the driveway will help with the process.  It takes approximately 6 – 12 months to fully cure a new driveway.  After a minimum of six months, a sealer could be added on top of the asphalt.  This will increase the longevity of the driveway.  A sealer should then be applied every 2 – 3 years thereafter.

A driveway will definitely add that finished look to your home.  Give us a call for a free estimate.
